Granny Chic or Grandma Core Homes

Alright, I suppose it’s time we reveal that plot which we’ve been hatching all along with our series on historical interior design. This, our last post in this series, will not be on an interior design style from the past. Instead, with the newly acquired historical knowledge we’ve just bestowed upon you, we hope to better reveal the secrets of society's newest trend, which is inspired by the past: Grandmacore (or Granny Chic). This style takes all the best aspects of the styles we’ve studied thus far and combines them with the 21st century’s thirst for nostalgia. We hope you’ll join in our enthusiasm for this new style and take our tips on how best to achieve it.

Modern Appeal

As the 21st century grows into maturity, there is a growing hunger for simplicity, comfort, and sustainability. Life is go, go, go, all the time, as everything becomes increasingly streamlined. Everything is designed for peak versatility and utility. Yet, at the other extreme is wistful luxury, which only gives the semblance of comfort and only satisfies momentarily. Now people are looking for a break from practicality and unnecessary decadence. Granny Chic offers all of these features. It offers its fans the simple things in life and encourages us to take it slow when it comes to the things that really matter, like our homes. Plus, vintage inspiration makes it incredibly sustainable and easy on the wallet. We’ve been revealing the secrets of vintage style in an effort to give you a sense of what you like and what you would prefer to incorporate into a home inspired by the true lovers of vintage: grandmas everywhere.

Key Traits

To get the general feel for what granny core consists of, just let your mind wander back to your childhood. Picture cookies and milk, sunny days, cool nights, warm quilts, all the comfort of unconcerned play and satisfying rest. Take that and use it to embrace all the stereotypical traits of grandma-hood. That is all that this style encapsulates. The power of nostalgia is harnessed to create a space characterized by optimal comfort. Cheerful colors and floral motifs are the main harbingers, accompanied by vintage items and handmade details… and, of course, an essential element in any self-respecting granny’s home: a plethora of adorable knick-knacks that bring you joy. Granny chic is, by and large, a maximalist style, choosing comfort over practicality and things made with love over efficiency. Your house should not just look good for some metaphorical audience but should be a home that makes you and your family feel safe and comfortable. Grannycore is aimed toward creating a space that feels like a warm hug.

Getting the Look

At this point, I think we have to admit that this style is more of a lifestyle than a purely aesthetic preference. Part of achieving this aesthetic is by becoming the aesthetic. To start, you have to realize that handmade items not only give the feeling of a grandma’s hugs but also provide a sense of ownership and permanence that preserves the comfort of childhood while dispelling the instability that often comes with it. Not to mention the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment that comes with making anything with your own hands. Learning to crochet, knit, or even to do a small amount of sowing will be a great asset to you in life and in creating the home of your dreams. In addition to this, our biggest piece of advice is to thrift, thrift, thrift. The best way to acquire granny core-type items is to go to the source directly. Discarded quilts, bright glass and cookware, and of course the beloved knick-knacks can be found in greatest abundance at your local thrift stores such as Goodwill or Habitat for Humanity. In all of your efforts, remember that it is very important to maintain freshness. We’re looking for a comforting atmosphere, not a dated one. Try to stay away from muted and muddy colors, which give a dusty quality to your space. This look is about achieving an idyllic, romantic, and nostalgic sense of at-home-ness.

In conclusion, we hope you are now as obsessed with this new style as we are. It’s important to stay connected to our past as we work to make a safe future for ourselves and those we care about the most. We believe something as simple as an interior design method can serve as a small step down that road. Grandmas are a blessing, and we’re delighted to honor them in this way. For those of you who are already grandmas at heart, we hope this mini guide was helpful and that you enjoy that slowly growing collection of quilts.
